Jack Name is the best new thing this girl’s heard in a while.  It’s a little bit glam, a little bit showy, and a whole lot of weird.  Here is what John Dwyer had to say about Jack,

Whiffs of young Brian Eno, Gary Numan, Chrome, ELO, Bruce Haack, even Richard O’Brien (a la “Rocky Horror”) and Stefan Wul stain the sleeves of this story, but it’s still wholly original and cooked at home so it’s as honest as it is good for you. The sounds are a dense and ever-shifting beast—just an absolutely put-you-on-the-floor headphone record. The narrative holds as much significance as the sound; hopefully there will be a lyric sheet so teenagers ripe for a push in the right direction can follow along, pink-eyed , with their index fingers.”

The album, Light Show, just came out on Drag City.

Gimmee Gimmee Scientific Stuff

Out of Adam Widener’s laboratory comes the mad scientist’s new EP Gimmee Gimmee Scientific Stuff, bubbling over with anxious, urgent pop songs straight from the mind of a man on the verge of going all Mr. Hyde on our ass.

The title track is an anthem for punk scientists everywhere. It’s a shot of energy potion that praises test tubes and the elements with a simple catchy beat. Gimmeealso features a perfectly appropriate cover of the Godfathers of nerd rock, Devo. It is a straightforward, but great rendition of “Don’t Know What to Do Do,” that adds to the whole Watch-out!-I’m-about-to-transform-into-a-monster vibe the EP has.

Not only did Adam Widener create the seven little pieces of pop candy on Gimmee, he also created the totally awesome 3-D packaging. And get this: there are no pesky paper glasses, the vinyl itself acts as the glasses. Just place the translucent half red half blue record a few inches from your eyes and the cover art comes to life.

Nikki and The Corvettes - I Wanna Be Your Girlfriend

Track: Part Time - Seashells

part time, seashells, fuzz city records, eps, lo-pie, 2012, lopie, lo pie, lo pie music

Part Time is the arousing, weirdo, synth-pop brain child of SF’s David Speck, AKA Davida Loca. The sound is like if pop of the 80s dropped acid, went to a foggy strip club, and ended up going home with a one-armed dominatrix. Pretty strange, but hot nonetheless.

Fuzz City Records is releasing Part Time’s newest 7″, Seashells. Both of the tracks were previously released on the sold-out Saturday Night cassette. The A-side features the title track while the B-side is the seedy ode “She’s My Lover.” It simultaneously relaxes muscles and gets heart rates up with heavy pounding keys, a sultry slow guitar riff, and erotic lyrics.

Seashells will be out just in time for all those holiday hook ups heading your way. From mistletoe smooches to end of the world make out sessions to that all too clichéd New Year’s Eve kiss, the soundtrack has got to be Part Time.
